Raining season is the perfect time to enjoy warm, tasty food that makes you feel good inside. In Nigeria, the rainy season isn’t just about muddy roads and soaked slippers. It’s also the perfect excuse to relax, eat something hot, and maybe take a sweet nap (if you’re not too busy). There’s just something about the sound of rain and the smell of wet ground that makes food taste even better. One day at work, while it was raining heavily, someone said, “Chai! If I can just eat hot Ewedu and Amala now, then sleep in this rain!” And honestly, I felt the same way! If you’ve ever felt like that too, don’t worry this post is for you!

Here are 10 dishes you can enjoy during rainy season in Nigeria

1. Pepper Soup (Goat Meat, Catfish, or Assorted)Catfish peppersoup

This one is for my spicy food lovers! A delicious pepper soup made with local spices and protein like goat meat, catfish, or offals(assorted). Serve it on its own or with rice, yam or agidi. Find the recipe here, Chicken Pepper Soup Recipe

2. Beans and Pap or Akara and Pap

Pap (also called ogi or akamu) is a staple food in Nigerian homes made from fermented maize(corn), usually served hot. It pairs perfectly with beans porridge or fried bean cake (akara). Add pepper sauce or fried plantain and thank yourself. Find the recipe here How to make the perfect Akara and Pap(Akamu)

3. Okra or Okro Soup with swallowOkro /okra soup

This is one of my all-time favourite “draw” soups. It’s made with chopped okra and usually eaten with swallow (eba, semo, fufu, or anything you like). Some people mix it with ogbono for extra thickness and taste, while others keep it simple with pepper stew and plenty of protein (meat, fish, and more). However you make it, it’s always a hit.

4. Yam Pepper Soup (aka Ji Mmiri Oku)

Ji Mmiri Oku, a beloved igbo dish, which means “yam pepper soup” It’s made with yam, local spices, goat meat, stockfish, and dry fish. All cooked together in one pot. Scent leaves or uziza are usually added for extra flavour. It’s spicy, filling, and perfect for cold weather and also good for new moms.

(Don’t worry if you don’t know how to make it, the recipe will be on the blog soon!)
