My today’s recipe is an anti-inflammatory drink. This recipe has a lot of health benefits and with this, you can learn how to make a healthy lemonade. You can make it when your body needs a booster or detox. Let me tell you a little bit about this recipe and how it became something I make often for my family. Most people might be familiar with it but what differentiates this recipe from another is the ingredients/method used.
So during the covid pandemic, a lot of fruits and vegetables that can boost the immune system were said to be taken, there I thought of what to make, and the ingredients to use. That was how the idea of this healthy drink came into place. I called it “my special COVID drink”. Made it to help boost our immunity.
Just make sure you get all the ingredients needed like lemon, lime, ginger, and turmeric. You can also add garlic, it is healthy but I dislike having to add it to my drink due to the unpleasant smell that comes out of it. This recipe doesn’t contain garlic but feel free to add any.
Ingredients
- 5 Large lemon
- 3 limes
- 2 ginger roots
- ½ tsp of turmeric
- Honey for sweetener (optional)
Health benefits of each ingredient
LEMON
Lemon is one of the most popular citrus fruits. It is often found in anti-inflammatory drinks. They are used in tea, cocktails even as cleaning agents. Lemons have anti-varial properties which can be used to boost the immune system and help fight against colds. It is also a source of vitamin C, calcium, zinc etc. Lemon does have a lot of amazing benefits for our health.
LIME
Limes are a green citrus fruit. It appears smaller than lemons but has a sour natural taste. Limes have many health benefits which include the reduction of inflammation and the prevention of chronic illness. It is also a great source of vitamin C which helps to fight off infection. Limes also help to prevent kidney stones, stroke and the common cold.
TUMERIC
Tumeric is relative to ginger. It contains some nutrients which help support the health system. some of the benefits of turmeric are that it helps to ease headaches, depression, cancer and some viral infections and others.
GINGER
Ginger has several health benefits. It helps with digestion, and nausea relief and can also be used as a flavour to food. Ginger can be used in different forms which include dried, fresh, powered and others. Adding ginger to your food or drink gives it an amazing flavour and a sweet spicy taste.
HONEY
Honey is a natural sweetener that contains antioxidants which protect the body cells. It is composed of sugar and contains a small number of vitamins and minerals. It is recommended for blood sugar levels than regular sugar but should be consumed in moderation. You can add a teaspoon of honey to a cup of tea instead of a cube of regular sugar.
Preparation process
- The first thing is to juice and strain your lemons and lime. Most people have different methods of juicing their limes and lemon. Years back before juicers became popular, I usually roll them on a surface then slice them into halve and start squeezing until I get all the juice out into a cup. But the easiest method now is to use an electric juicer or a manual lemon squeezer. You can also microwave it for about 20-30 seconds it makes it a lot softer and easier to squeeze. Squeezing it cold can deprive some of the juice from getting out and is also time-consuming.
- Once the juice is out, strain it to remove the particles present in it.
- Then wash your ginger very well until the sand and dust go off. You can peel your ginger using a peeler, spoon or knife but be careful not to peel too much of the flesh along with the skin this often tend to happen when using a knife to peel. You can leave it unpeeled then blend and strain out the water. Cut into chunks and put into the blender with a little water for easy blending.
4. Pour the blended ginger into a bowl and add a little hot water then allow to soak for about 10 minutes before sieving the water.
5. Repeat the peeling process for your Tumeric if you’re using a fresh one then cut it into pieces and put it into the blender with a little water. Sieve and keep aside. you don’t have to soak your Tumeric like ginger.
Final Process
Pour the lemon and lime juice into a bowl, add the ginger water, fresh turmeric water or ½ tsp of turmeric powder, garlic if you’re using any, and 2table spoons of honey for sweetener. Mix with a little water and pour into a glass jar. Consume immediately or store in the fridge for future use.
Storage: You can store this in the fridge for five days. Shake before use and allow the settled content on the bottom of the jar to mix.
