I was scrolling through Instagram one day when I came across a page where a lady was baking a cake, not in an oven, but directly in a pot on her stove. I already knew people used pots to bake before. I just didn’t realize you could do it this simply, basically the same way you’d cook any regular pot of food.
I watched her go through the whole process, and it looked so simple that I thought, why not try it myself? We were in the mood for something sweet at home, so I decided to give it a shot using the same method. And it worked. The cake came out well on the very first try.
Since then, I’ve made it a few more times. Every single time, it comes out just as nice and delicious. It’s honestly become a regular treat in our house now, so I figured it was time to share it properly here on the blog.
Ingredients
Equipment
Method
- Bring out your non-stick pot, this doubles as your mixing bowl, so there's no extra dishes to wash. Pour in the vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla flavour.
- Add the sugar and egg yolks and mix everything together.
- Pour in the flour and baking powder, a pinch of salt and mix until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until fluffy, then gently fold them into your batter.
- Smooth out the top of the batter and wipe down the sides of the pot.
- Cover the pot with its lid and place it on the gas stove over low heat. There's no need to preheat anything first.
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Check with a fork or toothpick, if it comes out clean, your cake is ready.
- Allow it to cool slightly, then slice and enjoy.
Notes
Whisking the egg whites separately and folding them in is what gives this cake its light, soft texture.
Using the pot itself as your mixing bowl saves you a step but make sure it's clean and completely dry before you start.

If you don’t have an oven, this one’s worth trying. It’s also great if you just want a simple treat made with what’s already in your kitchen. It’s become a staple in my house, and I think it’ll become one in yours too.
Have you ever baked a cake without an oven before? Let me know how yours turns out.
